The Third crusade sweeps over the land and divides the country into different parts. You´re playing as an elite Assassin, who´s task is to solve the war between two powers or at least make it less stronger. You will do it by weakening the Crusader and Saracen forces. You´re in the middle of your task, but there seems to be a conspiracy in the background that is including you more and more. This conflict threatens not only the Holy Land, but the whole world...

When Assassin's Creed starts, you are a barkeeper in the 21th Century, kidnapped by scientists to be used as a research project. The scientists want you to give them Information about the Assassins in the 12th Century, because your ancester was among the elite of the Assassins, known as, Altair. They believe that the DNA of any creature is an archive, where you can find all information, not only about their individual life, but also the lives of their ancesters.

The scientists use an apparatus, named the 'Animus' (picture above). The Animus allows them to recreate your memories. So you are living through the memories of your ancester once again.

After using the Animus you aren't a barkeeper any longer. Now you are the elite Assassin Altair in the 12th Century. Altair is given the order to recover an old treasure. He kills an innocent during that mission and that is a violation of the assassin's three creeds. When Al Mualim, the leader of the assassins, discovers this, Altair is demoted to an apprentice once again because of his arrogance...

Altair has to kill nine key figures, involuted in the crusades.
